Breastfeeding Support

The Breastfeeding Support Service is run by Families and Babies (FAB), a charity offering weekly peer support groups across Dorset (including Bournemouth and Poole).

Volunteer peer supporters are mothers who have undertaken training to help other mums in their breastfeeding journeys. They give support and evidence-based information to help women make informed choices, deal with any problems and continue breastfeeding for as long as they wish.

The Breastfeeding Support Service provides:

  • a text message contact (or phone call in priority cases) following discharge from hospital or home birth to offer support throughout the postnatal period
  • continued face-to-face peer support at friendly breastfeeding groups
  • support groups within local Children's Centres
  • referral to midwives, health visitors or GPs as required.

More details about the service, including how to train as a peer support volunteer, are available on the FAB website. Your health visitor and midwife will also be able to provide details of your local breastfeeding groups.
